"Yelling at the Sky" Zara Alexandra

“Yelling at the Sky” is the third single from La Honda Records for Zara Alexandra, ahead of her next album releasing on April 11.

“This is a story of someone’s life as they are tied to a sense of place, a job on the land with the trials and tribulations that come with that choice.”

– Zara Alexandra

"Yelling at the Sky" is a story told from the perspective of a child whose mother has left. Frustrated by her husband whose "matrimony is to the land," the relationship strained by his dedication.

Left to take care of everything on his own, "working harder than he’ll make, that's a rancher’s give and take", we’re left to wonder if his wife only saw farming and small-town life as a "passing fad". The recurring motif of "yelling at the sky, but he's not asking why" suggests a stoic acceptance of this hard reality.

The child takes note of her father’s hands, which tell stories of "sand, dirt, dust, blood, and rust," yet they are also described as "hard but gently," suggesting a quiet strength and tenderness. The final image of his hands returning to the land completes the cycle, emphasizing the connection between the farmer and the land.
